What are HSN and SAC codes?

HSN (Harmonized System of Nomenclature) is the international system for classifying traded goods, adopted under India's GST regime to identify what a business sells. SAC (Services Accounting Code) is its counterpart for services. Together they form the backbone of GST classification: your invoices, e-way bills, and GSTR returns reference these codes, and GST rates are notified against them. Longer codes are more specific — the leading digits identify the broad chapter or heading, and additional digits narrow down to the exact product or service.

How to find the right code for your product or service

Start by searching a plain-language description of what you sell — the material, function, or trade name. Compare the candidate descriptions carefully: classification follows what the item actually is, not what you call it in your catalogue. If you already know part of the code, search by the code prefix to browse the more specific entries under it. For borderline cases — kits, bundles, or processed goods — confirm the classification with your CA, since the code you choose drives the GST rate you must charge.

Why correct classification matters

The HSN/SAC code on your invoice determines the GST rate applied, feeds into your GSTR-1 summary, and must match what your buyers report. A wrong code can mean under- or over-charging tax, notices from the department, and blocked input tax credit for your customers. Setting the correct code once per item in your billing software — and letting every invoice inherit it — is the easiest way to stay consistent.
