What is GST?

Goods and Services Tax (GST) is India's unified indirect tax on the supply of goods and services. It replaced a patchwork of earlier taxes such as VAT, service tax, and excise duty with a single, destination-based tax. Every registered business charges GST on its sales, claims input tax credit on its purchases, and pays the difference to the government. The rate that applies to a particular product or service depends on its HSN/SAC classification and current government notifications.

How to calculate GST — exclusive and inclusive

There are two everyday situations: adding GST to a base price (exclusive), and pulling GST out of a price that already includes it (inclusive).

Adding GST (exclusive amount)

GST = Base Amount × Rate ÷ 100

Total = Base Amount + GST

Example: ₹1,000 at 18% → GST ₹180 → Total ₹1,180

Removing GST (inclusive amount)

GST = Inclusive Amount × Rate ÷ (100 + Rate)

Base Amount = Inclusive Amount − GST

Example: ₹1,180 at 18% → GST ₹180 → Base ₹1,000

CGST vs SGST vs IGST explained

GST in India is collected by both the Centre and the States, and how it is split depends on where the buyer and seller are located:

  • Intra-state supply (buyer and seller in the same state): the GST amount is split equally into CGST (Central GST) and SGST (State GST). At an 18% rate, you charge 9% CGST + 9% SGST.
  • Inter-state supply (buyer and seller in different states, or imports): the entire tax is charged as IGST (Integrated GST). At an 18% rate, you charge 18% IGST.

The total tax burden is identical in both cases — only the way it appears on the invoice and flows to governments differs. Your invoice must show the correct split, which is why this calculator lets you toggle between intra-state and inter-state supply.

GST Calculator FAQs

To add GST to a base (exclusive) amount, multiply the amount by the GST rate and divide by 100: GST = Amount × Rate ÷ 100. The total is Amount + GST. For example, adding 18% GST to ₹1,000 gives ₹180 GST and a total of ₹1,180.
